The $28,000 Cheese Sandwich

I guess I should file this story under 'J' for 'Just Plain Weird.'

The AP news service released a story today about a 10 year old cheese sandwich that sold for $28,000 on E-Bay.

The sandwich, made 10 years ago by Diana Duyser, a work-at-home jewelry designer, is believed by Duyser to contain an image of the Virgin Mary. This I had to see. Oddly enough, the toast marks on the sandwich do resemble a face. As far as whose face it is, well, that's another story. It could be pop-star Madonna, Mary Queen of Scots, or even the Virgin Mary. It's so vague that it could be anyone.

Duyser, however, is convinced. After making the sandwich 10 years ago, Duyser took a bite and then noticed the face. She then put the sandwich in a plastic container filled with cotton balls and kept it on her bedside table. She claims that it has never once shown signs of mold.

The people with the free cash to pay $28,000 for a 10 year old cheese sandwich turned out to be the online casino, GoldenPalace.com. You can see a pic of the sandwich there and judge for yourself. The CEO of GoldenPalace.com says he'll use the sandwich to raise money for charity.

E-Bay originally pulled the auction, on the grounds that they don't allow 'joke auctions.' They re-instated the auction once they had confirmed that Duyser actually owned the sandwich and intended to sell it.

Now, I think I'm going to go meddle about in the kitchen. I think I remember one of my frying pans had a scorched area that maybe looks like Sarah Jessica Parker. At $28,000 a pop, I can retire after a few hundred cheese sandwiches.
